Bas-relief of the Resurrection of Christ
Carved and gilded wood, probably walnut
Probably Central European or Spanish work from the 16th century

This large rectangular panel of carved wood, enhanced with gilding and a brown patina, represents the central theme of the Resurrection of Christ.
In the center, Christ emerges triumphant from the tomb, in a mandorla radiating light. Draped in a light cloak, he raises his arm towards the sky and holds in the other hand the standard of victory, symbol of redemption. Around him, swirling clouds and angel heads in the corners form a celestial setting. In the lower register, the earthly scene comes alive: the Roman soldiers, surprised by the resurrection, are represented in a tangle of bodies, shields and armor. Their faces express both stupor and terror according to an expressive vocabulary typical of the period. In the abundant decor, many picturesque details attract the eye: a small rabbit hidden in the vegetation, a dog, a snail, a lizard, naturalistic winks that humanize the composition.
On the right, discreetly inserted into the decor, a secondary scene illustrates the Holy Women at the tomb, coming to witness the Resurrection. In the background the meticulously sculpted city of Jerusalem gives depth to the composition, and testifies to a narrative and decorative concern.
This bas-relief is characterized by a nervous and expressive modeling, with accentuated volumes, a dynamic composition which translates the spiritual impulse, a gilding applied to wood, which imitates the liturgical bronzes
Such a panel could have several uses, it is perhaps an element of a monumental altarpiece, inserted in a polychrome ensemble, an element of a preaching pulpit or a tabernacle or even a devotional panel intended for a private chapel.
The theme of the Resurrection, essential in the Easter liturgy, was particularly valued in the Counter-Reformation when the Catholic Church encouraged spectacular and sensitive images, capable of moving and instructing the faithful.

Very good general condition, old gilding with wear from use, accentuating the reading of the reliefs. Small losses
