"Pair Of Large Carcel Lamps With Mechanism, Restoration Period, H 92cm"
Pair of important large living room lamps in column form in gilded and patinated bronze and metal, Carcel type with key-wound clockwork mechanism, complete with reservoirs, glasses and globes. These lamps were cleverly electrified without drilling but from the top of the burner equipped with a pin socket, therefore possibly removable. The key mechanisms have not been dismantled or checked and are sold as is. In good condition. Total height 92cm. Height to socket 71cm. Base section 17X17 cm. The Carcel lamp invented around 1800 works with oil which feeds the burner by pressure from the key-wound spring which thus makes the oil rise, the filling then being done from the top. These lamps because of the clockwork mechanism were very expensive and reserved for large houses, especially of this rather exceptional size. Parisian work around 1820/30
