Dance rattle scepter, Shango cult. Yoruba Nigeria. Mid-20th century. Wood, patina of use. It represents the goddess Oya, surmounted by a double axe. The double axe symbolizes Shango, god of thunder. Paying homage to Oya helped avoid floods and storms, which destroy crops. Thus, Oya is represented as a nurturing mother.
