Born in Boston, he studied at Harvard. He arrived in Paris around 1873 where he attended the Académie Julian. A friend of the painter John Singer Sargent, he traveled with him to Haarlem in 1880. The following year, he married the Swedish painter Emma Löwstädt-Chadwick and the couple settled in Grez-sur-Loing. Together they traveled around France, visiting other artists' colonies.
