"Second Half Of The 18th Century Portrait Of Johann Caspar Schweirer "
A beautifuloil on canvas portrait, presented in a contemporary carved wooden frame gildedwith gold leaf. A note on the back of the painting states that the work depictsthe philanthropist Johann Caspar Schweirer, born in Zurich and died in Paris in1811, who was the adoptive father of the Swiss-French painter Anna BarbaraBansi (1777-1863). In the portrait, Schweirer is depicted wearing typicalmid-18th-century clothing and hairstyle: a white wig, a closed coat, and awhite jacket with a fabric front. His crossed hands and shifty, almost pensivegaze contribute to the realistic nature of the painting, highlighting askillful use of chiaroscuro and great pictorial skill. As indicated by theplaque on the front of the painting, the work is attributed to the artistJ.H.W. Tischbein (1751-1829), a renowned German painter and engraver, wasfamous for his historical paintings, mythological subjects, and portraits,including those of his friend Goethe. For this reason, it is a painting ofgreat historical uniqueness, dating back to around the second half of the 18thcentury.
