"18th Century Red Copper Basin With Openwork And Hammered Design, Decorated With A Mythological Animal Spitting Flames "
18th century basin, red copper bed warmer, handcrafted. The motif of the lid is hammered and openwork in the round. It has as an original and unusual theme an animal that seems to be a sea monster with scales that spits flames (a sort of dragon). The motif is related to the object that receives still red embers coming out of the fire, used to warm the sheets in winter. A piece of forged and twisted metal is fixed on the bottom of the opening basin. This element allowed to fix a wooden handle to push the basin to the bottom of the bed (it is missing). The whole is in good used condition (visible shocks are due to use) This basin is an original piece of folk art and is an example of the 18th century imagination to represent mythological animals or animals living in distant and mysterious regions in still unknown areas.
