He specialized in alabaster, but also marble, onyx, and bronze for some works. He combined neoclassicism and Art Nouveau, blending fine detail, elegant lines and often a decorative style intended for salons. He created numerous busts of historical or literary figures: Joan of Arc, Beatrice (Dante Alighieri's muse), Dante himself. Bessi is considered one of the most important representatives of Italian salon sculpture of his period. Visible at the Galerie Courcelles Antiquités, at 97 rue de Courcelles, in the 17th arrondissement of Paris.
