"Portrait Of A Young Lady Of Quality. François De Troy & Workshop, 17th Century."
Oil on oval canvas. Exceptional 17th century wooden frame, topped with a very finely carved pediment, with its original gilding. Total dimensions with its frame: 121 x 78 cm Canvas only: 77 x 62 cm This very beautiful portrait, executed around 1685-1690, focused on the model, strikes with a sparkling look and a calm and serene expression which gives the face a particularly lively character. The social importance of the character who is represented here young (around twenty years old) is highlighted with few artifices; a garnet velvet dress decorated with fine lace and a light stole. Her hairstyle, typical of the period, is called "à la fontange" with an aigrette and topped with a jewel attached with pearls. We know of several portraits representing the same character, some in private collections, others passed through public auctions, others in museums. But for the moment, we have not yet been able to determine with certainty the identity of the model. This beautifully crafted painting is from the studio of the painter François de Troy (Toulouse 1645 - Paris November 21, 1730). Coming from a family of Languedoc artists, he was trained in Paris in the studio of Claude Lefebvre who taught him the profession of portraitist. This explains the sure technique and the serious atmosphere of his works. De Troy is an heir to the French tradition: his art is marked by realism and restraint. The sober layout (the subject is seen from the waist up, generally seated) and the neutral background allow the emphasis to be placed on the face...A renowned and highly appreciated painter, he enjoyed numerous commissions from both princes and the upper middle class.Provenance: private collection in Toulouse. Good condition, sold with invoice & certificate.
