"Vanity" sculpture, ca. 1900
Patinated plaster sculpture depicting a human skull placed on a grimoire, accompanied by a die. On the grimoire is an inscription in Latin: “Statutum est hominibus semel mori”, which translates as “It is established that men must die only once.”
The whole illustrates the classic theme of the memento mori, recalling the fragility of life and the role of chance in existence. A unique piece, at the crossroads between an object of curiosity and a symbolic sculpture, it is part of the tradition of vanities, highly prized in art since the Renaissance.
Patina assumed from the period. The object is sold in its condition, with some lack of color and some chips on the base.
