Ravageot and Ravageode, a delightful group of basset hounds
Emmanuel FREMIET gave his little group a pyramidal structure that could have appeared a little massive if he had not introduced a slight imbalance due to the contrary movement of the two basset hounds. Certainly the two dogs are sitting on their hindquarters, while their tails in a contrary movement encompass the back of the terrace. However, Ravageot raises his head, seeming to wait for the slightest sign to go wandering. Ravageode, she, bends low to observe the funny little thing that moves at her feet, a snail. Subsequently, the sculptor, amused himself by introducing into his sculptures this touch of humor which characterizes him, like a little offbeat naturalist wink that can be observed in his Curlew and Frog, his Griffon Dog with Tortoise, his Monkey with Snail or even his Griffon with Fly...
After his first successes brought him a great financial ease, Emmanuel FREMIET, as he himself admitted, "was suffocated by so much money". "I thought I was a millionaire and gave myself over to crazy extravagances (...). Three months later, I didn't have a penny left. I went back to work with all the more feverishness because it was my only means of existence (...)." Thus, taking up a previous group of basset hounds that he had presented at the Salon of 1848, Ravaude and Mascareau, dogs of the crew of M. de V., he sculpted his Ravageot and Ravageode to respond to a saving order from the State.
