Antique pair of mercury glass candlesticks. Good used condition. Height: 28cm. Neck height 4.4cm. Mercury glass, mercury or silver plated, was very fashionable in the 19th century. Imitating silverware, this technique offered a less expensive alternative for people who could not afford solid silver pieces. These pieces were also called "poor man's silverware". Their manufacture consisted of painting a thin layer of mercury inside the blown glass. Over time, this silver color disintegrates.
