A group of five men sits at the mouth of a cave; receiving a hint from an approaching man in armor, they gesticulate. The "Alte Pinakothek" in Munich also houses a warrior group by Salvator Rosa (30 x 24 cm, inventory number 2387), which is compositionally comparable to this artwork:

Salvator Rosa was an Italian draftsman, painter, and poet. His depictions included landscapes, philosophical allegories, and historical scenes. He studied classical literature, poetry, and music and, in 1631/32, entered the house of the painter Jusepe de Ribera. After stays in Naples and Rome, he accepted the invitation of Duke Giancarlo de' Medici (1611-1663) to Florence in 1640, where he enjoyed high esteem.
