Oil on framed canvas, signed Goerg, entitled "Les dévotes", titled and dated on the back 1925. Canvas dimensions: 116 x 89 cm Edouard Goerg was born in Australia in 1893 to French parents, in a family of champagne merchants. He soon went to their counter in England where he stayed for a few years before settling in Paris in 1900. Very early destined for painting, he became a student of Paul Sérusier and Maurice Denis at the Académie de Ranson where he studied from 1913 to 1914. From 1920, he became one of the major figures of French expressionism. In the interwar period his success was manifest. He participated in the Ateliers d'art sacré with his former master Murice Denis. He was elected member of the École des Beaux Arts de Paris in 1965.
