Suzanne Ramié trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Lyon. She began her career as a textile designer in Lyon before moving to Provence in the mid-1930s. She learned the art of ceramics with the potter Jean-Baptiste Chiapello and then founded in 1938 with her husband Georges Ramié the Madoura workshop in Vallauris, an acronym composed of the first letters of the words maison, Douly and Ramié. Breaking with the tradition of utilitarian objects produced by local potters, she produced works with refined and original shapes and became one of the key figures of Vallauris. She is also known for her artistic ties with Pablo Picasso, whom she welcomed into her studio in 1946 and to whom she taught the art of enameling and clay firing.
