"Ammonite Fossil On Foot"
Ammonite Fossil on Base. This beautifully preserved ammonite fossil is more than just a decorative object: it's a tangible piece of prehistory. Ammonites were marine animals that lived about 240 to 65 million years ago. Like modern-day squid and octopuses, they belonged to the mollusk group, but they had a beautiful spiral shell. This shell was made up of chambers that the animal used to regulate its buoyancy—an ingenious mechanism of nature. The name "ammonite" comes from the Egyptian god Amun, who was often depicted with curled ram's horns. The resemblance to the shells of these animals earned them this name. Ammonites disappeared along with the dinosaurs, during the great extinction event at the end of the Cretaceous period. Dimensions: 23H x 22W x 8D
