19th Century Oak Bas-relief Depicting The Torment Of Saint Anthony The Great
19th century oak bas-relief depicting St Anthony the Great, also known as St Anthony of the Desert. This very powerful scene depicts St Anthony tormented by demons. St Anthony is considered the father of Christian monarchism. He was born in Upper Egypt in 251 and withdrew as a hermit in the desert, hence the insert showing him in a cave. The torment of St Anthony was painted by Michelangelo. This bas-relief was extracted from the rubble of the Notre Dame church in Epinal, which was destroyed by bombing in 1944. This beautifully patinated bas-relief is a unique piece whose very fine sculpture radiates the power of this scene. Shipping outside France, price on request.
