- In Greek mythology, Zeus decided to punish humanity for its wickedness with a universal flood. Only Deucalion, son of Prometheus, and his wife Pyrrha survived the flood by building an ark that allowed them to take refuge on Mount Parnassus. When the waters receded, the two asked the oracle how to repopulate the earth: following her riddle, they threw stones behind them, which transformed into new human beings, giving rise to a new humanity.
