Antonio Cutino (new York 1905 - Palermo 1984), Capretta.

Artist: Antonio Cutino
Antonio Cutino was born in New York on January 8, 1905. He moved to Palermo, his parents' hometown, and attended the Academy of Fine Arts there. He was a classmate of Amorelli, Guarino, and Camarda, with whom he maintained a lifelong friendship and artistic partnership. In 1924, he went to Rome to take a free course in nude painting at the local Academy. There, he came into contact with the artistic movements that were just beginning to sweep across Europe and Italy. He met Mario Sironi, Gregorio Sciltian, and Gino Bonichi, known as Scipione. The latter invited him to join the "Painters of the Twentieth Century" group, which aimed to create pure art inspired by Renaissance sources, free from all imported "isms." Although he was ideally associated with this movement, Cutino did not formally join it, not only because he critically observed its cultural narrow-mindedness and taste for rhetoric, but above all because, by his very nature, he was openly opposed to any manifestation of political servility creeping into the ranks of its followers. He returned to Palermo and from 1926 to 1938, in addition to working as an illustrator and publicist at the IRES in Palermo, he continued his rigorous research into oil painting techniques. He worked as a painter and portraitist in his own studio on Via De Spuches. He participated in numerous international and national group exhibitions such as the Mediterranean Art Biennial (1946), the Regional Exhibition of Syracuse (1947), the 1st Exhibition of Figurative Arts of Southern Italy in Naples (1956), and the exhibition of Italian Painting in Zurich (1965) with De Chirico, Sironi, and De Pisis. His first solo exhibition dates back to 1947, and his last retrospective, promoted by the City of Palermo, was in 1978. He died suddenly in Palermo in November 1984. His paintings are included in numerous private collections in Rome, Catania, Palermo, Turin, Udine, Milan, Essen, Brussels, Paris, Zurich, New York, and public collections: the Circolo Artistico Banco di Sicilia, Cassa di Risparmio, the Chamber of Commerce of Palermo, the Municipality of Catania, and the Sicilian Regional Assembly.

The painting is an oil on canvas, depicting a goat in the mountains.
