A splendid 19th-century genre painting depicting a tender family scene set in a rural kitchen: several children, gathered around an injured or unconscious child, are affectionately tending to his injured foot with a basin of water and a ceramic jug.
The composition is balanced and emotionally intense, with a careful psychological rendering of the faces and a warm light that envelops the domestic interior.
The work is a typical example of the sentimental and realistic painting of Guglielmo Stella, a Venetian artist active in the second half of the 19th century, close to the painting of Gaetano Chierici and Antonio Ermolao Paoletti, and sensitive to the narrative atmospheres of the Lombard and Viennese schools.
