A small-format oil painting on panel, created in the 19th century in Italy.
The subject is the Holy Family with the Infant Saint John the Baptist, a devotional scene widespread in Renaissance and Baroque painting.
Description of the work: Technique: Oil on panel Period: 19th century
Subject: Holy Family with the Infant Saint John the Baptist
Composition: In the center foreground, the Virgin Mary holds the Child Jesus in her lap, flanked by the Infant Saint John, who affectionately caresses him. On the left, the older, veiled figure is Saint Joseph, barely visible with a stylized halo. The halos, stylized with thin lines, indicate the sacredness of the figures. The background is dark, with glimpses of illuminated landscape on the right. The warm light and the draperies highlight the Caravaggesque or Mannerist influence.
Frame: The frame is gilded, richly decorated with floral motifs in relief, in the Baroque style, but is later than the painting, more precisely from the early 1900s.
Condition: The panel shows craquelure (surface cracks typical of aging oil on wood). Some areas are very dark due to oxidation of the varnish or accumulated dirt, particularly on the faces.
Dimensions: 51.5 x 38 cm - panel 41.5 x 28.3 cm
