Natsume - Round Box, Maki-e Laquer, Japan, Edo Period, 18th-19th Century.
Natsume or tea container. Made of wood covered with red and black lacquer and gilding. The handmade decoration depicts a Japanese cherry or plum tree in bloom. The artist used the hira-maki-e technique of sprinkling metallic powder.
