Alexandre François Bonnardel entered the National School of Fine Arts in Lyon on February 23, 1891 in the studio of Antoine Christian Zacharie (1819-1899). He became a student of Jean-Baptiste Poncet and exhibited for the first time at the Salon des Beaux-Arts in Lyon, where he received his first medal in 1899. In 1900, he was appointed professor of the life model class at the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts in Lyon.
