Superb Louis XVI court dagger, circa 1780, intended for an officer or a high-ranking person. This symbolic piece is typical of the representational weapons of the end of the Ancien Régime. The finely chiseled brass handle is sheathed with twisted red copper and gilded brass wire, offering a very beautiful textural effect. The double curved quillon guard is richly decorated with relief motifs, notably representing a trophy of arms including drum, flags and helmet, classic emblems of military glory under the monarchy. The guard arch is decorated with a checkerboard pattern and cartouches depicting a stylized antique helmet, against a background of foliage. The straight, double-edged blade is made of steel with a central rib. The dagger is accompanied by its original black leather scabbard, with brass chape and rivet. 41cm long In very good general condition, this dagger retains all its period patina.
