Beer, born in Brno in the Austro-Hungarian Empire, studied in Vienna and Rome and worked in Vienna, Paris and, later, Florence. Based in Paris from 1875 to 1892, he was a famous portraitist, also collaborating on several occasions with Alfred Grevin to create charming and rather commercial figures of women. Of Jewish background, Beer was an important sculptor for late 19th-century Jewish history and the formation of Israel. This candlestick representing a nude woman holding a lotus is a small decorative work by a great sculptor, and the dynamism and balance of the figure are incredible.
