"G. Scot / 50s / Der Kreis / The Circle / Drawing / Kunst Und Stil Der 50er Jahre / Zeichnun"
Original drawing from the 1950s / Graphic icon of male sensuality Original drawing by G. Scott, an iconic artist of the 1950s, renowned for his illustrations published in the Swiss magazine Der Kreis, a major reference in post-war European homosexual culture. This work, in graphite enhanced with wash, depicts a shirtless young man, wearing trousers with suspenders pulled down, in a relaxed, almost theatrical pose, his hands in his pockets and his pelvis thrust forward. The model, athletic and charming, embodies the typical masculine ideal of the time: a muscular body, a quiet confidence, an amused look. It reflects all the stylized and coded homoerotic aesthetic that Scott skillfully developed in his compositions. The quality of the line, the rendering of the volumes, as well as the slightly ironic expression of the face, testify to the artist's graphic mastery. 30.5 x 22.5 at sight 49 x 39 with frame signed lower right G. Scot — pseudonym of Gérard Raoul Descot (1923–1968), sometimes spelled “G. Scott” — is a draughtsman who is now rediscovered for his discreet but significant role in the history of European homoerotic art. Active in the 1950s, he collaborated on several occasions with the Swiss magazine Der Kreis (The Circle), where his published works demonstrate an aesthetic that is at once sober, sensual and profoundly human. An artist with a supple and expressive line, G. Scot developed a very personal style, between stylized realism and suggestive elegance, often centered on the idealized male figure: athletic torso, charming gaze, relaxed body. His drawings are imbued with a gentle, never crude, sensuality, in keeping with the very demanding editorial line of Der Kreis, which rejected all vulgarity in order to defend a dignified and valorizing image of the homosexual man.
