"Hsp Marius Gueit - Basque Coast Landscape"
Marius Gueit, is a French painter, (Bordeaux 1877-1956). In Bordeaux, he was a student of the decorator Louis Cabié before being influenced by the landscaper Louis Auguste Auguin. Very quickly, he specialized in painting landscapes of the South-West, notably the Landes region, the coastal dunes, the Basque Country and the Arcachon Basin. From 1904, he exhibited regularly at the Salon des Amis des Arts in Bordeaux and then at the Salon des Artistes Français in Paris from 1909. In 1905, he co-founded and was vice-president of the Société de l'Atelier d'Aquitaine. Several of his works are present at the Museum of Fine Arts in Bordeaux. Our panel represents a view of the sunken and rutted paths in the landscape of the dunes of the Courant d'Huchet, his favorite place if ever there was one. In the distance, the Atlantic Pyrenees mountain range stands out in the morning sky, from which the Rhune stands out. The peaceful course of the clouds is part of an impression of great tranquility marked by the clearing on the back of the dune and the stunted young pines and short grass. The ocean is revealed in the morning mist as the sun warms the sandbanks in the distance. Marius Gueit invites us to contemplate this unique and privileged place on the Landes coast, this sky with its wide, pure luminosity and very recognizable style. "In the translations of his desert immensities, he was able to give free rein to his temperament. His dunes, brilliant fairylands of colors, are of a heady voluptuousness. Here, no more objects, no more dark masses, but spots, luminous flows of pink and gold, enhanced by light shadows, melting their penetrating warmth into the innumerable colors of the waves. On the horizon, the sea and the sky mingle their pale nuances. The sea breeze floats in the air, glides over the dunes and the moor" (Georges Roux). Signed lower left and dated 1916.
