Curved Chest Of Drawers On All Sides Attributed To Pierre Migeon

Elegant curved chest of drawers with two drawers without crosspieces, attributed to Pierre Migeon.

The front and sides are adorned with sumptuous floral marquetry decoration in stained wood on a rosewood background, depicting rich stylized bouquets, harmoniously integrated into three cartouches with rocaille contours and framed in violet wood.

The cabinet rests on four arched legs ending in chased and gilded bronze sabots.

The bronze ornamentation is of great finesse, finely chased and gilded, including the apron, with its beautiful openwork scrolling foliage motif, the beak-shaped pull handles decorated with star-shaped foliage, the scrolling flower keyholes, and the drops falling gracefully onto the uprights.

The top is topped with a beautiful Flanders corbin beak mark, curved on all sides following the sinuous line of the cabinet. This type of composition, both in terms of the quality of the marquetry and its form and ornamentation, allows for an attribution to Pierre Migeon (1696–1758), purveyor to the court and the great aristocratic families under Louis XV.



Renowned 18th-century Parisian cabinetmaker Pierre Migeon distinguished himself from his contemporaries with his elegant craftsmanship, focused on the beauty of wood and refined geometric decorations.

His works were less ostentatious than those of Oeben or Cressent, but they were distinguished by their subtlety and quality of execution. Sinuous, curved lines, exotic woods such as violet wood, amaranth, rosewood, and palisander were crafted with meticulous care, and motifs frequently included frills, herringbone patterns, and geometric marquetry.

The distinctive feature of this piece of furniture is the exquisite execution of this marquetry. It stands out as a high-quality piece of furniture from the mid-18th century, thanks to the choice of woods and the finesse of its decoration. The front and sides feature a symmetrical frame but a distinctive asymmetrical floral decoration.
