"Imari Porcelain Spittoon, 18th Century, Japan, East India Company, Vase With Handle"
A rare and elegant Imari porcelain spittoon, dating from the late 18th or early 19th century, a transitional period between the Edo and Meiji eras. This is an exceptional piece both for its unique shape and the richness of its decoration. The porcelain is finely decorated in the traditional Imari palette: underglaze cobalt blue, iron red, and precisely applied gold highlights. The dense decoration depicts bouquets of peonies and chrysanthemums. Its flared funnel shape, with a side handle, is typical of spittoons of the period (also called "medical spittoons" or "spittoons"), but this piece goes far beyond its simple utilitarian function thanks to its artistic quality. 13.5cm in diameter and 10cm in height. Very good condition.
