"Large Dry Lacquer Buddha, Burma, 19th Century"
Gilded Buddha in dry lacquer with colored glass inlay characteristic of the Shan (Tai Yai) style of the Mandalay region. He is seated in Bhumisparsha mudra, the taking of the earth as a witness to his enlightenment. In Burma, the origins of lacquer seem to appear with the pagodas of Bagan in the 12th century, this technique allows the creation of large statues with a low weight, which is easy for its movement. Here for a height of 65 cm the weight is 4.3 kg. Burma, 19th century.
