"Oval Gilt Bronze Table Centrepiece, Directoire Period - Circa 1795-1804"
Elegant oval-shaped table surtout, in finely chiseled gilt bronze, typical of the Directoire period. The rim is decorated with small baluster vases linked together by fine chains, in a sober and refined neoclassical style. The whole rests on small discreet feet, and the base is decorated with an original mercury mirror, presenting a beautiful patina of use. The openwork band, with a cross-pattern punctuated with flowers, reflects the geometric and refined aesthetic of the end of the 18th century, in the transition between the Louis XVI style and the more severe taste of the Consulate. A presentation object par excellence, this surtout served to magnify the table during dinners or receptions, by holding candlesticks, baskets or decorative elements. Two chains are missing.
