This magnificent Virgin and Child is an emblematic work of the Venetian or Veneto-Cretanean school, dating from the 16th century. Painted on a wooden panel in tempera over a crushed chalk base and a gold ground, this religious icon testifies to the artistic and spiritual richness of this pivotal period, when Byzantine and Venetian Renaissance influences converged.
