"The Ascension Of A Holy Bishop, Red Chalk, Late 17th Century "
This small red chalk study, made at the end of the 17th century, representing the ascension of a holy bishop carried to heaven by angels is certainly a project for a large altar painting. Perfectly in the spectacular spirit of the Counter-Reformation, it bears on a mat an attribution to Jean Baptiste Jouvenet (1644-1717), decorative painter, who was rector of the Royal Academy of Painting. Without firmly adopting this hypothesis, the drawing shows obvious qualities of execution, which connect it to the fervent expression of the faith of the Grand Siècle exalted by the French artists of the time.
Framed in the thirties, never opened.
