Object description :

"Jun Dobashi (1910-1975), Painting "abstract Gouache", Signed, Circa 1960 "
Framed painting under glass representing an abstract gouache on paper, signed lower right. 20th century, made around 1960. Size of the gouache 26.5 * 36.5 cm and 47 * 37 cm with frame Jun DOBASHI is a Japanese painter of Western abstract style and close to European informal art. In 1933, he studied at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts and obtained his diploma in oil painting in 1938. He was then a member of a group of artists known in Japan as Kofukai. From 1938 to 1939, he settled in Paris and enrolled at the Académie Ranson. Upon his return to Japan, he was sent during the war to Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In 1953, Dobashi returned to France for a very long stay, this time ending in 1969. As a result, he is often perceived as a Franco-Japanese artist. In Paris, from the moment he arrived, he participated in the Salons d'Automne and Comparaisons. He then became an established lithographer, receiving the Prix du Dôme in 1956. He also exhibited regularly at the Salon de Mai between 1956 and 1960. In 1960, he also participated in an exhibition at the Galerie Charpentier as a representative of the Ecole de Paris. Finally, it was a solo exhibition at the famous Redfern Gallery in London in 1961 that marked a turning point in his career. From there, his works were exhibited annually at the Fricker Gallery in Paris until 1969. He also participated in group exhibitions in Japan, Germany, and the United States (e.g., in 1964 at the International Exhibition of the Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh). According to some art historians, "his works reflect an abstraction using material effects against a background of brightly colored tachism." Returning to Japan in 1969, Dobashi continued his work in Tokyo until his death in 1975. His works are included in the permanent collections of the National Museum of Modern Art in Tokyo, the Musée National d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, the Israel Museum in Jerusalem, and the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York.
