Bronze plaquette representing the Emperor Titus.
Italy, 16th century or early 17th century.
Dimensions: 10.5 x 8.2 cm.
This plaquette comes from a well-known series of the twelve Caesars dating from the middle of the 16th century, this series is notably preserved at the Bargello Museum (see the photo of the catalog and here for the example of Titus): https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Italia,_anonimo,_tito,_1550_ca..JPG
The version with this beautiful frame of military trophies and lion muzzles is much rarer, there is apparently no complete series preserved. A few isolated examples are located in particular at the Brescia Museum (cat. nos. 140 and 141) and at the Grassimuseum in Leipzig (cat. nos. 190 and 191). In both catalogs this framed variant is dated from the 4th quarter of the 16th century.
Beautiful medal patina.
To report : a little wear and a square hole at noon.
