Provenances:
- Probably MD Kaïeman, his sale, Paris, Hôtel Drouot, April 27, 1859, n°1068: JB Deshays. The Adoration of the Shepherds - Good red chalk drawing, mixed with ink
- Former collection of the Marquis Ph. de Chennevières (1820-1899), art historian and director of Fine Arts Academy in Paris, his mark (L.2072) lower left.
- Former collection of Jules-Alexandre Duval le Camus (1814 - 1878), painter, his mark (L.1441) lower left. Exchanged to Chennevières in 1861, with two drawings by Denon, for four of the twelve drawings by Abel de Pujol, for the Apostles of the church of Saint-Vaast in Arras. The one of Saint Thomas, currently kept at the Met Museum, bears a long inscription in the hand of Chennevières relating to this exchange. He mentions the drawing presented (see photo).
A delightful compositional study, with several variations and revisited in an 18th-century style, based on a fresco by Andrea Lilio in the church of Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome. The attribution to Deshays, which dates from the 19th century, seems entirely plausible.
