E. Battiglia, “cleopatra” Sculpture, 20th Century

Alabaster sculpture representing Cleopatra dressed in a chendjit (Egyptian loincloth) and wearing a nemes headdress. She is seated, leaning on what appears to be a daybed, decorated with hieroglyphs. The sculpture is engraved with two inscriptions, on the back “E. Battiglia, Firenze” and on the front, “Cleopatra”.

This sculpture is in very good condition, it nevertheless has a slight chip on the base, on the left.

E. Battiglia is an Italian artist who was active in Florence towards the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century. Battiglia made decorative sculptures or copies of antique sculptures often in marble or alabaster. He signed his works “E. Battiglia, Firenze” and these were particularly prized by collectors.
