"Statue Of Mary Magdalene From The Early 16th Century. Lower Rhine. "
Carved oak applique statue with a hollowed back, Lower Rhine, early 16th century. This is a statue representing Mary Magdalene, recognizable by her long hair. The former sinner turned saint is recognizable by her loose hair; during the meal at Simon the Pharisee's, she had used it to wipe the feet of Christ, whom she had anointed with perfume. Stripped of all her finery, she is now covered only by her long curly locks falling over her shoulders, in a manner characteristic of North Germany, and by a simple cloak. Her hands have disappeared.
