Antique Importay Russian Orthodox Icon Of Saint Nicholas Of Mozhaysk 53.5 X 44 Cm
Early 19th century Russia (probably Moscow or St. Petersburg)
Important Russian icon, 53.5 x 44 cm, depicting Nicholas the Wonderworker, Saint Nicholas of Mozhaysk. His central image is framed within an iconographic frame decorated with hagiographic “stamps” recounting his life and miracles, all surrounded by a floral, colored, and gilded border.
This high-quality, very large, and highly detailed icon is in good condition. Slight imperfections, rubbing to the gilding on the right edge, and tiny cracks in the paint testify to its age.
This important work of Russian Orthodox religious veneration was most likely made for the Church or commissioned by a noble family. Its size and quality make it a rare historical piece.
According to Russian legend, in the 13th century, the citizens of the besieged city of Mozhaysk began to pray earnestly for the protection of Nicholas the Wonderworker. Suddenly, his image appeared in the sky. He was formidable and held a sword in one hand, and the city itself in the other. The enemies, of course, were scattered, and this image became famous in Russia. Since then, "Nicholas of Mozhaysk" has been depicted on icons and sculptures, holding a sword and the Mozhaysk Kremlin.
Dimensions: 53.5 x 44 x 2.5 cm / approx. 3.6 kg
