A Damascened Devotional Pendant.

Spain, probably Toledo, 17th century.

Dimensions: 6.4 × 5.4 × 1 cm.

This finely crafted hexagonal pendant, composed of iron and richly inlaid with gold and silver, exemplifies the damascening technique for which Toledo was renowned. One side is adorned with the Three Nails of the Crucifixion, while the reverse bears a simple, unadorned cross—each symbol evoking the Passion of Christ.

The locket opens in a concertina fashion, revealing compartments designed to hold devotional images. The interior includes spaces within both lids and two central frames, allowing for the display of four to six images. Serving as a personal altar, this portable object of piety was intended to accompany its owner in travel and prayer.
