Animated Gouache From The 18th Century Beautiful gouache from the 18th century representing Nomentana Street with the Church of Santa Agnese.
The views of the suburbs of Rome in the 18th century were very popular and many traveling artists liked to reproduce them on the spot during their travels, artists such as Caspar Van Wittel (Gaspard Van Wittel), to whom we can find similarities of features with our gouache, these artistic study trips were already common in the 18th century and we continued in the same spirit in the 19th century with the Grand Tour.
Our gouache therefore represents the parish of Santa Agnese, one of the oldest churches in Rome. These representations, these drawings, these gouaches, constitute today historical testimonies of the history of Rome and of life at the time in which they were executed.
The religious complex of Santa Agnese in this 18th century gouache is identical to drawings of the same place in the 19th century, it is Funny to see that the church is treated in the manner of architectural capriciousness and is animated by many characters but in fact it is indeed reality, and nothing has been invented!
This gouache is of very good quality, the invoice of the drawing reveals many details reminiscent of the school of Gaspard Van Wittel: the details on the monuments and the architecture, the way in which the vegetation is treated as well as the characters.
A very pretty gouache of good quality and nicely framed in a wooden rod gilded with gold leaf. A beautiful gouache forming a historical testimony on the architecture and life in the suburbs of Rome in the 18th century.
