Edmond Barbarroux - Sunset In The Mediterranean 1931 Oil On Cardboard - Pom Marine
Oil on cardboard, by the painter Edmond Paul Auguste Barbarroux 1882-1948, depicting a seascape representing a sunrise or sunset over the Mediterranean. The painter lived in the Var. The work is signed lower left, accompanied by the anchor, the distinctive symbol of official painters of the navy, as well as a dedication to a man named "Lacarriere", and dated 1931. On the back is the painter's business card, again bearing his signature, with a dedication. As well as an inscription, this time, certainly from the hand of a later owner of the work. The whole is in a beautiful and large varnished wooden frame. Overall dimensions 37x32 approx. Cardboard only 21.5x27 cm approx." Son of a designer from the Toulon arsenal, he was a student of Frédéric Montenard and Louis Cauvin[1]. From 1907 to 1939, he participated in the Salon des artistes français where he exhibited: Madrague au Levant (1926), Coup de mistral en Méditerranée (1928), Derniers rayons sous les Pesquiers, Hyères (1934), Lumière d'août (1936), L'Estérel et Vallée de Belgentier (1939)[2]. He taught drawing at the Rouvière high school and at the Toulon school of fine arts. In 1930, he succeeded Gabriel Amoretti as director of the Fine Arts.
