Rare Art Nouveau mahogany desk with its matching armchair, a remarkable yet little-known work by Georges Nowak (1884–1956), a Parisian cabinetmaker of exceptional talent.
Based at 47 rue du Faubourg Saint-Antoine, in the heart of Paris’s historic woodworking district, Nowak was part of the early 20th-century decorative revival. His furniture, characterized by elegant and harmonious lines, echoed the finest examples of the Parisian and Nancy schools, while remaining distinct from the mass-produced creations of renowned firms like Majorelle or Gallé.

This desk showcases a refined architectural design: the gracefully curved legs extend beneath the top, where they merge into a sculpted high-relief motif depicting a naturalistic bouquet of pansies. Each of the four corners of the desk is softly rounded and supported by these delicately carved details.
The gently concave apron houses two drawers with rounded edges, each fitted with gilded bronze handles in organic, vegetal forms. Two discreet side extensions slide out up to 30 cm, activated by a small gilded bronze pull.

The matching mahogany armchair echoes the desk’s aesthetic language, with recessed armrests, subtly curved lines, and a seat upholstered in green short-pile velvet (slightly worn), trimmed with decorative upholstery nails.

A rare Art Nouveau ensemble—desk and armchair—testifying to the unique craftsmanship of Georges Nowak.
