Object description :

"19th Century Lungs And Trachea..."
Franz Josef Steger (1845 - 1938), sculptor, collaborated with the anatomist pathologist Carl Ernst Bock (1809 - 1874) at the University of Leipzig to produce models for teaching. Steger's didactic models were sold through international catalogs and scientific stores in Germany. Sometimes associated with the productions of the Auzoux workshops in France, they shared their know-how so that students finally had another support for their learning…. Until then, they had to buy their sometimes very expensive subject of study from grave robbers. Imagine without refrigeration... With this introduction in mind, I'm talking to you about my copy of a plaster lung section, dating from the end of the 19th century, mounted on a wooden panel that fits its shape and has happily retained its original polychromy. (Few students handled it; it must have been hung on a wall in the science room. An old label and an inventory number personalize this object).
