"Large Aubusson Tapestry Circa 1650"
Exceptional Aubusson tapestry woven in wool and silk around 1650, depicting Godfrey of Bouillon wounded in front of Jerusalem. Jerusalem Delivered tells the story of the capture of Jerusalem in 1099 by Godfrey of Bouillon during the First Crusade. Jerusalem Delivered is a 16th-century Italian epic poem. The tapestry shows Godfrey of Bouillon wounded by an arrow and being treated by his physician Herotima. An angel intervenes to bring dittany, a precious plant that will heal the leader of the Christian knights. The scene is framed by an interesting border decorated with trophies of arms. In the center of the upper border are a coat of arms surmounted by a count's crown. The Grenoble Museum has the same tapestry in its collections. The tapestry has suffered damage in the upper quarter and also shows some wear and accidents. Dimensions: 5.42m long and 2.87m high. Delivery on estimate.
