Born in Villejuif on October 23, 1818, Charles Parmantier is an animal sculptor whose artistic career is not known to us. We simply know that he presented several sculptures at the Salons des Artistes Français from 1866 to 1872 as well as in various regional exhibitions. From his marriage to Marie Élisa Rodt, he had two children, including a daughter, Amélie, who, after following the teachings of Madame Baudouin at the École Nationale de Dessin, embraced the profession of porcelain painter. Charles Parmantier's artistic career spanned a very short period, 8 years, and undoubtedly, despite his presence at the Salons des Artistes français, he never considered himself a true sculptor, because all official documents declare him as an "employee", that is to say, in the 19th century sense, a person providing mainly intellectual work...

Yet his small bronzes denote a real talent equal to that of the most renowned animal sculptors such as Édouard Delabrierre, Alfred Dubucand, Emmanuel Fremiet, Jules Moigniez or Pierre-Louis Rouillard. He thus fashioned a whole set of animals from the woods and forests or from the moors, pheasants, deer with ten horns, a moose, a deer fight or a fight between axes, a fallow deer and its doe, a fallow deer and a doe, does, an ibex and its kid, a goat and its kid, a ewe and its lamb… Fox on the LookoutThe straight tail, the pricked ears, the piercing gaze, the tense muscles, the fox on the lookout, frozen in ardent expectation, seems ready to pounce as soon as the hare pokes the tip of its snout at the edge of its burrow. The beautiful workmanship due both to a deep knowledge of the animal world, and to the quality of a fine and delicate chiseling makes this small bronze a work of quality.
