EDY-LEGRAND represented here an encampment in the atlas, visible in the center of the composition (several tents and grazing horses), surrounded by mountainous relief, while 2 women move away from the gathering, probably to bring back food and water. Artwork produced on a large 65 x 100 cms format regularly used by EDY LEGRAND.

Edouard Léon Louis WARSHAWSKY known as EDY-LEGRAND (1892-1970) began his artistic studies in Geneva and exhibited there for the first time at the Rath museum in 1912. After a brief stay in Munich, he studied in Paris at the Humbert Academy then at the Fine Arts. He then studied under the direction of Lucien Simon. He started as an illustrator and began to travel in Europe. He also paints large compositions and decorates liners and Parisian department stores. In 1923, he traveled to Algeria and then to Morocco. In 1933, he collaborated with Jacques MAJORELLE but it was especially with Henri Clamens that he befriended in 1934 in Morocco. He travels for twenty years from Tangier to Goulimine, Morocco then becomes his land of asylum and he settles there.

*** A highly sought-after modern orientalist painter, his works can sell for several hundred thousand euros (378,494 euros on June 9, 2011 at Artcurial for "La Tikka, l'heure du thé").
