Francesco Ballesio was born in Turin in 1860. He first attended the Albertina Academy in Turin, then moved to Rome, where he completed his studies and settled permanently.[1] He mainly painted watercolours with an orientalist theme starting from photographs, as he had never been to the Middle East:[2] for example, the painting Arab Gunmen, "Arab Pistoleri", closely resembles an illustration that appeared in the periodical L'Illustrazione Italiana in October 1878.[1] Ballesio gained an international reputation through his paintings, some of which were exhibited at the Esposizione di Belle Arti in Rome in 1883 and the Esposizione Generale in Turin in 1884.[3] Thanks to the support of a certain Mazzoleni and an English art dealer named Dudens, most of his canvases were purchased by private collectors in the United Kingdom and the United States of America.[1][4]
In 1912 Ballesio moved to Tivoli, where he would remain until his death in 1923.
