This bronze represents the close guard of King Behanzin of Dahomey. This had the particularity of being composed exclusively of women. The selection was very harsh and the young women swore absolute loyalty to their king. They cannot therefore have relationships with other men. Their ferocity in combat quickly leads them to be compared to the Amazons, mythical warriors of Antiquity. Even today, the Beninese presidential guard is composed exclusively of women.
