"Big-eyed Kokeshi - Seya Juji (1924-1204) Circa 1950"
Juji started as an apprentice carpenter in Koriyama. Then he worked in a furniture factory in Shibuya. During the war, he was assigned to a steelworks, and lived poorly, earning only vinegared rice. Enlisted, he was captured and deported to Siberia. Released, he worked as a farmer for a while, then devoted himself to doll turning from 1948. He learned from a master how to draw eyes and the apron decorated with peony fur. His dexterity brought him contracts for restoring old dolls, and to exhibit regularly. Several men in his family continued in the business. - About kokeshis: they were toys for little girls, or offered as a token of love or friendship; or symbolized the desire to have a healthy child. They are said to have a talismanic function, are modesty, gentleness. They are also said to have a Buddhist origin. Their hairstyles are reminiscent of a Buddha's bun. A note on the history and function of kokeshis will be shared. This is a vintage doll and may have minor imperfections.
