"17 Th Century Engraving Of Simon De Montfort, Slayer Of The Albigensians "
An efficient and brutal warrior, but one of unfailing piety, Simon IV de Montfort had been chosen by his peers to command the crusade against the Cathars, also known as the "Albigensians." Against all odds, on September 12, 1213, he defeated Count Raymond VI of Toulouse and his ally, the King of Aragon, at the Battle of Muret. The latter was killed, while Raymond VI was forced to flee to England.
